Team Briefing Guidelines

Team briefings are a structured method of communication where managers regularly update their teams on relevant information, plans, and priorities. Effective team briefings improve alignment, engagement, and two-way communication.

Key Principles

  • Regular and consistent — briefings should happen at a set frequency (weekly or fortnightly)
  • Cascaded — information flows from senior leadership through each management level
  • Two-way — allow time for questions, feedback, and team input
  • Relevant — tailor the content to what matters for the specific team
  • Brief — keep sessions focused and time-bounded (typically 15–30 minutes)

Typical Briefing Structure

  1. Progress — what has been achieved since the last briefing
  2. Policy — any changes to procedures, standards, or expectations
  3. People — team changes, recognition, development updates
  4. Points for action — tasks, priorities, and deadlines for the coming period
